Pork-barrel politics and Alaska. A match made in Tom Delay's version of heaven.
Can someone explain to me why Alaska needs $453 million to build a couple bridges, while at the same time it hands out checks for $919 (FY 2004) to each resident from the Permanent Fund, totalling $552 million? Here's an idea ... if you want a bridge that goes to nowhere, pay for it yourself. You've got the money ... New Orleans doesn't.
Or if you don't care about hurricane Katrina vicitims, send the money it to the military. At $1500 bucks a pop, that $453 million could have bought bulletproof vests for 300,000 U.S. soldiers.
